DIY Vest | T-shirt Make Over

The making-over process of T-shirts is one of my favorite DIYs! First of all, they are knitted and thus, they can be easily cut without getting frayed on the edges. In addition due to their elasticity they actually “forgive” any inaccurate cuts. There are usually so many of them in all closets and there is always a T-shirt that someone is bored of and is happy to gift it :-). See how to cut your t-shirt into no-sew boho style vests  🙂

You will need

Tools

x pair of scissors
x fabric marker
x ruler or an A4 sheet or a magazine or something that helps you as a guide for drawing straight lines

Materials
x just the Tee 🙂

The first step is to get rid of the sleeves. You can keep a small cup sleeve, or make it completely sleeves, or with a low armhole. Take your marker or your chalk and draw the style line you wish to create.

Below i am marking from the Center Front (CF) a diagonal line towards the sides of the neckline. This line will form the front opening of my vest. Take your time and plan your style line as you like it.

You could actually cut everything together. If you do, then you will have the same  ‘V’ neck at the front and the back of your vest. On the other hand, you could also open your T-shirt again, and cut the ‘V’ shape only at the front, while at the back you could follow the round neckline.

I always like to cut on Fold Lines, doing fewer steps. Below you see that almost at the bust level, I use my scissors to cut only one part of my T-shirt, the front part and I avoid to cut the back. This is how I create the front opening.

Then I cut the hem line, creating a raw edge, which matches the rest of the T-shirt design.

I cut now all the parts I have marked.

I am using my fingers to measure.

Ok…now it’s time to plan the tussles. First I need to decide the position. It is important for my style to decide on the height of my tussles … which will be the point as from where i wish to begin. As soon as i know that, then i can use my ruler, to draw them on my T-shirt.

I am using my two fingers as a measurement for the thickness of the fringes (tussles).

When all the lines are drawn, I am ready to cut 🙂

I hold my scissors comfortably and I start following all my marked lines, cutting everything at the same time. I start with the cup sleeve.

And now, I am ready to cut everything.

I take every cut string and i stretch it. This way the strings are becoming heavier and they just fall nicely.
