Making Easter Egg ART

MAKING EASTER EGG ART

Ok, you may not be the type that particularly enjoys dying Easter Eggs with colored sachets that can be bought from your supermarket. The truth is that in all those ready colours, we should also always read the small labels, since sometimes there may be chemicals in inside. There are of course natural dyes, usually from plants, that are certainly best for eating the eggs after cracking them ;-)!

Me again, I like to play with eggs. In Greece we have a rich tradition in Easter egg decorations. We die eggs with onions, with embroidery threads, with silk fabrics, with home-made egg-glue and paper and  we make very impressive eggs, actually very arty eggs!

Below you can find some of the most traditional to the most alternative techniques for decorating your eggs! Get some good company and get creative!

EGGS WITH PAPER TOWELS OR ANY OTHER THIN PAPER

Tools

x a bowl to put the egg’s white
x  a brush to place the egg-glue on the egg

Materials

x boiled eggs
x napkins /  newspaper

Let’s DIY DoIT!

Cut out pieces of paper and have your eggs nearby. Take also an egg and separate in a bowl the yolk from the white. keep it handy with a brush near you!

Dip the pieces of paper into the bowl to make them egg-wet and then embraced the egg covering it – without letting gaps. The paper will stick to the egg as it will be drying  🙂

Leave them  to dry for about 3 hours at room temperature and your EggyArtWork will be ready!

EGGS WITH EMBROIDERY THREADS

This is from the more traditional painting techniques in Greece! The threads must be embroidery threads!

Τοοls

x a pair of scissors
x embroidery cotton threads

Materials

x string or foil
x venigar for adding tin the boiling wather
x boiled eggs

Let’s do it!

There are two ways to put the thread around the eggs. Whether  you twirl around the egg and secure it with string, or you put averything in aluminum foil. See both ways demostrated below ..

Cover the egg with the threads

Tie with your string securing the threads on the eggs

Ready for the pot with the boiling water

You can do the same with thinner threads…

And into the pot in boiling water with half a glass of vinegar in it! The vinegar helps for more intense results in colors

Take the eggs out after 20 minutes

Let them dry, un-wrap them and polish them with a cloth and some olive oil!

ALTERNATIVE METHOD – IN FOIL!

Cut the threads in small pieces

Put the egg on the thread pieces

Start wrapping the foil tightly around the egg

Ready for the pot. Do exaclty the same thing. Boil the water, place the eggs in, add half a glass of vinegar and let them boil for 20 minutes

Let them dry and un-wrap!

And here you go! This is the result from the two techniques we have just seen! All the colours of the Rainbow and many more shades on your Easter eggs 🙂
