Tools

Surely you could start creating right this minute, without having specific tools. You can actually get very creative by exploring ways of using things around you as tools :-)! You might be amazed by the outcome and how many things can be used as tools. A book, for example, makes a great ruler and with a 90 degrees angle.

What you can find?

It is true, that you can also find a lot of specific tools to help you in your creations and you might feel the need at some point to actually invest a bit on it! Your initial direction depends on what raw materials you’re thinking of using. For instance, if you like origami and you are limited by your old plastic handle paper scissors, you might wish to invest on a good pair of scissors. Maybe you also wish to check out other cutting tools, like knives and pizza roller knives, base-cutting surfaces, hole-punchers and generally tools that would give you more freedom and more possibilities in paper-crafts.

Crafting & DIY could become an addictive habit and soon you’ll realize that a good tool can really make the difference for those handmade gifts you’re making with so much love.

How can you decide on a pair of scissors for example?

If you wish to purchase a pair of scissors, first you’ll need to understand what you want to do with them: cutting paper or fabric? General use or specific crafting? If you are out there for crafting scissors it means that you need something which can get down and dirty to cut through whatever a project calls for and something that can do detailed work. The more uses a pair of scissors have, the more expensive it is. In any pair of scissors, though – and also in any kind of tool – I suggest that you actually come in actual contact, like body contact with tools before you start building your toolkit. Before purchasing your scissors, for example, it would be wise to hold a few pairs first and experience its characteristics. By holding them in your hands you can assess first of all the ease of holding. It’s ideal to have a pair of scissors that feels like it’s made for your hands. If they’re comfortable to hold and easy to control, scissors become an extension of yourself and you can do everything feeling confident. The size of the scissors also plays a role in terms of how heavy and how suitable they are for your hand. You need to experiment with different blade lengths as well, in order to decide what is better for you. Then the ease of cutting comes, and you need to check how smooth and clean that cutting line is. From this experience with different pairs of scissors, you can drive to the best option for you and avoid getting a tool that tires your hand and gives you cramps!

The same principles apply to all tools. Of course on YouTube, there are also reviews on products and they can help you decide, but still you would need the physical contact!
On Wakeupcut.com creations, scissors are the Master of creation, as in many occasions they are the only tool we use!

For a basic toolkit for crafts, I would suggest the following tools:

pliers
– cutting knife
– hammer
– hole-puncher
– ruler
– stapler
– various scissors
– signs/markers
– stapler (stapler gun)
