Discolour IT | Make Over

DISCOLOUR YOUR TEE | MAKE OVER

Many jersey tops have sometimes stains and spots that do not come out. A good way to refresh them is actually alter their color! This way, you will overcome the issue of stains and at the same time you will have a new garment to wear!

Jersey tops, in general  can be cut, sewn, tied, etc. and easily transformed into interesting forms and shapes, as well as to be altered in terms of their colour with almost certain success in most cases! Due to their cotton fabric content, when it comes to dying or undying they usually get great results! Dyes usually require high temperatures during the process, from 60 to 90 degrees. In addition, you may need a stabilizer, such as salt or vinegar, to secure the colour fastness! On the other hand, the undying processes are even simpler. While dyes can be both natural or artificial, in most cases the undying procedures employ artificial substances, which contain chemicals and strong substances. Therefore, due to their effectiveness,  undying does not require high temperatures to produce results or stabilizers. The most common is bleach.

What you really need if you are using bleach is to be protectited and to spend some time hands on! Therefore, after getting your respirator-mask & gloves you need to be there during your un-dying processes, in order to avoid the chance of destroying materials and fabrics. Be there and observe the results. A good tip to be safer is to actually wet lightly your garments, using plain water, before you apply the bleach. It may take a bit longer to achieve the intended result, but it worth’s it since it is a much controlled and friendlier procedure for the yarns.

Grab parts of the t-shirt, creating small gathers and tie them strongly together.  The parts you tie will not change in colour that much, since the bleach will not be able to penetrate through the tightly tied parts of the fabric.

Watch how your garment reacts. When you start observing alterations in color, start adding slowly some extra water. When the result is satisfying, then rinse well, wash it with green soap and soak your creation into a fabric conditioner, rinse off and dry.

That’s how my t-shirt looks like! At this stage, I start with the Make Over in terms of shape!

Make vivid and dark colours on your garments lasting longer!

Fold your t-shirt in half, if you wish to achieve cuts, which are symmetrical on the front and back side, as well as on the left and right. Mark all your style-lines with your chalk or marker. These style lines, are there to guide your scissors’ cuts!

Instead of using a ruler, I took an A4 sheet, which I folded several times and I use it to draw my necklines. The advantage of this is that you can use it both in a straight and in a curved line 🙂

Stretch all the cuts and the raw edges so that they softly curve. Put your new t-shirt in a pillow case and in the washing machine. Wash it in 30 to 40 degrees, in order to have a more used and authentic t-shirt look!
